Over $600 raised to benefit the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Ryan Klosterman scored two runs for the Commodores in a 5-3 loss to the Nashville Sounds at Greer Stadium tonight in a seven-inning exhibition game.  Over $650 was collected at the gates that will be donated to the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

“This gave our guys a chance to play a professional team,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said.  “It does our hitters and pitchers well.  It’s a light moment and it’s better than a practice.”

Klosterman started the game with a leadoff double to deep center on an 0-2 count.  With two away, Cesar Nicolas hit a single between first and second base scoring Klosterman.

Klosterman then hit a solo home run over the left field wall in the third inning to extend the VU lead to 2-0.

The Sounds scored three in the third to take their first lead of the game.  Tony Alvarez singled up the middle; stole second and scored when Luis Figueroa doubled down the right field line.  Andy Abad reached second on an error by Antoan Richardson in centerfield while Figueroa advanced to third.   Figueroa scored and Abad moved to third when Ruben Mateo hit a shot to third base.  Abad finished the scoring with an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Chris Truby.

Stephen Shao started the fifth inning with a single and moved to second on a single by Matt Zeller.  With two away, Aaron Garza drew a walk to load the bases for Warner Jones.  Jones also drew a walk which scored Shao to tie the game at 3-3.

The Sounds regained the lead in the fifth inning, 4-3, when Chris Truby scored on Carlos Rivera’s double to right field.  Truby reached base on a fielder’s choice.

Nashville extended its lead to two, 5-3, in the sixth inning when Tomas de la Rosa hit a home run off the left field foul pole.  Tony Alvarez walked and stole second, but was caught stealing on a throw by Jonathan Douillard to Tony Mansolino at third to end the inning.

Blake Owen went four innings giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and walked one while striking out three.

“Blake did a good job,” Corbin added.  “I have some thinking to do to my 25-man travel roster.”

Michael Wagner went one inning and gave up one run and collected the loss.  Nick Pilkington pitched the final inning and gave up one run on one hit while walking one.

Willis Roberts earned the win for the Sounds who used six pitchers in the game.  Roberts gave up one run on two hits and struck out two while walking two.

Twenty Commodores saw action in the contest.  Klosterman was 2-2 with two runs, while Rucker Taylor, Cesar Nicolas, Gil Kim, Stephen Shao, and Matt Zeller each recorded a hit.

Vanderbilt resumes regular season action tomorrow when they travel to Indiana to take on Evansville.
