Vanderbilt Finishes Third at Bryan National Collegiate 4-4-04 4/4/2004 May Wood second at 216 BROWNS SUMMITT, NC — Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team moved up a notch to finish in third place Sunday at the Bryan National Collegiate Women’s Golf Championship Sunday. The Commodores’ May Wood, tied for the individual lead after 36 holes and leading much of Sunday, finished second after posting a four-over 76. Duke’s Elizabeth Janangelo edged Wood by two shots with a two-under 70. Wood, who started her round on No. 4, suffered a double-bogey six on No . 2, her 16th hole of the day. Playing conditions were more difficult as the Commodores as a team shot 13 over-par — ten shots worse than Saturday, but still the fourth best team total of the day. Sarah Jacobs had Vanderbilt’s best day with a 73, finishing in 11th place. Courtney Wood shot 75, Chris Brady 77 and Kristen Svicarovich had a 78 for Vanderbilt. Duke won the team title with a five-over par 869 total. Wake Forest was 14 strokes behind in second place with Vanderbilt four shots behind the Demon Deacons. There were 18 teams competing. The Commodores as a team shot three-over par to remain in fourth place as Wood’s effort tied her for the individual lead heading into Sunday’s final round. Duke shot six-under par as a team to lead the 18-team field by 12 shots over Auburn. Wake Forest is in third, one shot ahead of Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt freshmen Chris Brady and Kristen Svicarovich enjoyed strong rounds, each shooting 74. Seniors Sarah Jacobs had a 75 and Courtney Wood a 76 to complete the Vanderbilt team. Coach Martha Freitag was pleased with her team’s performance, especially that of May Wood and her two freshmen. “May made some good par-saving putts and actually could have scored even better,” Freitag noted. “Kristen has been playing so well lately and we knew her round yesterday (79) was better than that except for missing a few putts so today was no surprise. Chris hit the ball better today and was very steady.” May Wood birdied No. 2, the eagled the par 5 sixth and birdied the eighth to make the turn in 32, four-under par. She had three more birdies against three bogeys on the back side. The Commodores and the Gators shot seven-over par team scores to trail Duke by six shots. The Commodores had excellent days from senior Sarah Jacobs and sophomore May Wood, both of whom toured the Bryan National Champions Course in even par 72. They are tied for seventh place in individual standings. Freshman Chris Brady continued her fine play with a solid 75 and senior Courtney Wood added a 76. Kristen Svicarovich, another freshman, completed the Vanderbilt team with a 79. Jacobs began her day on the tenth tee and made her turn at one-over par. She finished two-under par over her last eight holes with birdies on the par 3 fourth and seventh holes. May Wood had four birdies to offset four bogeys during her round.
