BALTIMORE, Md. — The ninth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking decision to American Lacrosse Conference foe Johns Hopkins, 12-11, Sunday at Homewood Field. Senior Michelle Allen contributed seven points to the Commodore attack on four goals and three assists, but the Bluejays scored three of the matches’ final four goals to take the narrow victory.

Junior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli, making her third start of the season, made seven saves and scooped six ground balls on the day. Allen had five draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers to go with her team-leading seven points.

Allen, a native of Eldersburg, Md., scored the game’s first goal in the fifth minute. VU sophomore Kate Hickman gave the Commodores a 2-0 advantage in the sixth minute, scoring off an assist from senior Kelly Devlin. The Bluejays fought back to take a 3-2 lead, but Vanderbilt answered in the 15th minute with goals from seniors Jess Roguski and Lauren Peck to regain the advantage.

Two more goals from Allen and another by Hickman gave the Commodores a 7-5 lead heading into the half. Hopkins scored two goals in the opening five minutes of second half to tie the game at 7-7.

Over the next 10 minutes, Peck and Hickman would each find the back of the net, giving Vanderbilt a 9-7 advantage with 15 minutes remaining. After a pair of JHU goals, senior Christiana Serle scored to once again give the Commodores the lead. It was the first career goal for the Columbus, Ohio, native.

Less than 30 seconds after Serle’s goal, the Bluejays were able to tie the game. They took the lead in the 49th minute, 11-10, for the first time since the 14th minute. JHU’s Heidi Pearce then scored her fourth goal of the game to give the Bluejays a 12-10 lead in the 53rd minute.

Allen netted her fourth of the game one minute later, bringing the Dores within a goal, 12-11. But after winning the ensuing draw, Hopkins was able to drain the remaining six minutes off the clock by playing keep-away in their offensive end.

Seven points from Allen matches the Commodores’ highest individual offensive output of the season. Hickman also contributed three goals, her third hat-trick of the season. With two goals, Peck was the only other Commodore to tally multiple points.

The Commodores (5-3, 1-1 ALC) travel to North Carolina next weekend for a pair of road matches at UNC and ALC-rival Davidson, April 9 and 11.
