No. 5 Women’s Tennis Tops No. 4 Georgia, 4-3 4/4/2004 Tsoubanos clinches in final set of the day NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Aleke Tsoubanos battled back after losing the first set to Georgia’s Jitka Schonfeldova to win the deciding match point as Vanderbilt’s fifth ranked tennis team beat the fourth-ranked Bulldogs, 4-3 Sunday. Being urged on by a partisan crowd, Tsoubanos rallied to win the second set, 7-5, after dropping the first set by the same score. The Vanderbilt senior jumped to a 3-0 advantage in the third set before watching her lead shrink to 4-3. Tsoubanos won the last two games to allow Vanderbilt to win for the 19th time in 21 matches. VU is 9-1 in SEC competition. Vanderbilt dropped the doubles point despite Tsoubanos and partner Kelly Schmandt making quick work of Evgenia Subbotina and Jitka Schonfeldova at No. 1. The Commodores registered singles victories by Audra Falk at No. 1, Schmandt at No. 2, Ashley Schellhas at No. 4 in addition to Tsoubanos’ memorable win at No. 3.
