No. 20 VU Men’s Tennis Falls To No. 17 Tennessee, 5-2 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 20th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to 17th-ranked Tennessee Friday at the UT Varsity Courts. The loss drops the Commodores to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in the Southeastern Conference. The Dores jumped out to an early advantage in doubles play when senior Zach Dailey and sophomore Greg Sossaman defeated Mark Dietrich and Wade Orr, 8-3, at second doubles. But the Volunteers rallied, and would eventually clinch the first team point with a 9-7 victory at first doubles. In singles play, Commodore senior Chad Harris quickly tied the match, defeating UT’s Ockie Oosthuizen, 6-1, 6-1, at second singles. Junior Matt Lockin also was victorious for Vanderbilt, taking a 6-4, 7-5 decision at third singles. But Tennessee came back to earn wins at fourth and sixth singles to hold a 3-2 advantage. The match was decided at first singles, where 45th-ranked Simon Rea of UT edged 52nd-ranked Scott Brown of Vanderbilt, 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-3. The Vols would get another three-set victory at fifth singles for their final 5-2 advantage.
