4/1/2004

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The fifth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team plays host to a pair of key Southeastern Conference Eastern Division matchups when No. 28 Tennessee (April 2) and No. 4 Georgia (April 4) visit the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center this weekend. Friday’s match between the Commodores and Lady Vols is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. CT, with Sunday’s VU-UGA match starting at Noon.

The Commodores (17-2, 7-1 SEC) have won six straight matches and have not given up a team point in their last three appearances. Vanderbilt is an undefeated 9-0 at home during the 2004 season. On March 1, 2002, then-No. 1 Georgia defeated the Commodores, 4-3 — Vanderbilt’s last defeat at the Currey Tennis Center.

Junior Audra Falk leads Vanderbilt and is the 25th-ranked player in the nation according to the ITA. The senior duo of Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos is ranked No. 3 in doubles.

Vanderbilt was knocked out of the 2003 SEC Tournament by the Lady Vols, but the Commodores exacted their revenge in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament. Tennessee (12-10, 6-2) is led by No. 27 Tammy Encina and No. 85 Sabita Maharaj. The Bulldogs (15-2, 7-1 SEC) took a narrow 4-3 victory from the Dores last season. Georgia is paced by No. 5 Agata Cioroch and No. 12 Shadisha Robinson, making UGA the only team with two players in the nation’s top 15.

Following this weekend, Vanderbilt will close out the 2004 regular season schedule with a home match against Kentucky on Saturday, April 10, at Noon. The Currey Tennis Center also will be the host of the 2004 SEC Tournament, April 15-18.
