Vanderbilt’s Matt Freije to Participate in Pair of All-Star Events at Final Four Vanderbilt’s Matt Freije will take part in a pair of All-Star events prior to the NCAA Men’s Final Four this weekend in San Antonio, Texas. Freije will represent the Commodores in the 16th annual Mountain Dew College Slam Dunk and Three-Point Shooting Championships held on the campus of the University of Texas-San Antonio, Thursday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m. CT. It will be televised by ESPN the same day at 8 p.m. CT. Freije will participate in the three-point shooting contest along with Gerald Fitch (Kentucky), Luke Jackson (Oregon), Matt Lottich (Stanford), Brandon Mouton (Texas), Romain Sato (Xavier), Blake Stepp (Gonzaga) and Field Williams (Cincinnati). The departing senior forward also will participate in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) College All-Star Game at the SBC Center on Friday, April 2 at 7 p.m. CT. The 12-member college team will compete against the Harlem Globetrotters. Other members of the college team include Tony Bobbitt (Cincinnati), Andre Brown (DePaul), Erik Daniels (Kentucky), Andre Emmett (Texas Tech), David Hawkins (Temple), LeRoy Hurd (UT-San Antonio), Keith Walesowski (Dayton), Rashad Wright (Georgia) and Cory Violette (Gonzaga). Freije averaged a team-high 18.4 points and 5.4 rebounds during his senior season while helping Vanderbilt advance to its first NCAA Tournament since 1997 and its first Sweet 16 appearance since 1993. The native of Overland Park, Kan., ended his collegiate career as the Commodores’ all-time leading scorer (1,891) while finishing second in free throws made (444), third in blocks (72) and sixth in three-pointers made (183). Vanderbilt tied for the third-most single-season victories in school history, completing the 2003-04 campaign with a 23-10 record. |
