No. 20 VU Men’s Tennis Defeats No. 57 Old Dominion, 5-2 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 20th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team showed off its depth Wednesday with a 5-2 win over No. 57 Old Dominion at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center. The Commodores won the doubles point and then used straight-set wins on courts three through six to secure the victory. The duo of senior Chad Harris and junior Matt Lockin struck first for Vanderbilt, earning an 8-3 win at third doubles over Nate Grover and Calin Milos of ODU. Senior Lew Smith and junior Scott Brown secured the doubles point with an 8-3 win at first doubles over Izak Van der Merwe and Niklas Oskarsson. In singles play, the Commodores won five of six first sets. Senior Zach Dailey gave Vanderbilt a 2-0 advantage with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Monarch Adriano Mello at fourth singles. Lockin’s 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles over Milos put the Commodores within a point of the match. Harris was defeated by No. 18 Van der Merwe of ODU at first singles, but VU’s Smith clinched the match shortly thereafter, finishing off a 6-3, 6-3 win over Henrique Cancado at fifth singles. Freshman Nathan Sachs also earned a point for the Commodores, defeating Oskarsson, 7-6 (2), 6-1, at sixth singles to give Vanderbilt its final 5-2 tally. The Commodores (12-6, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) return to Southeastern Conference play this weekend with a pair of road matches at No. 10 Tennessee and No. 17 Georgia.
