Warner Jones Named SEC Player of the Week 3/29/2004
Warner Jones Named SEC Player of the Week NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt second baseman Warner Jones was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week by the league office today. Jones hit .737 in four games helping the Commodores to a 4-0 record for the week, including a three-game sweep of then-#24 Georgia. The Nashville native went 14-for-19 at the plate with six doubles, one triple and one home run. He was also 1-for-1 in stolen bases. He extended his consecutive game-hitting streak to 30 games and set the school record in Friday’s game vs. Georgia (28). He enters Tuesday’s game against cross-town foe Belmont one hit shy of tying the SEC record for a streak that spans consecutive seasons (31 by Rex Buckner of Mississippi State, 1992-93). In Sunday’s 12-8 come-from-behind win over the Bulldogs, Jones showed his ability to come through in the clutch. Down 5-3 in the fifth inning, Jones cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field giving VU its first lead of the game, 6-5. In the Georgia series, Jones went 10-14 for a .714 batting average with five doubles, one triple and seven RBI. Jones is the third Vanderbilt player to win a weekly award from the SEC. Ryan Mullins and Jeremy Sowers captured back-to-back Pitcher of the Week honors on Feb. 23 and Mar. 1, respectively.
