No. 5 Women’s Tennis Blanks Auburn, 7-0 3/28/2004 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The fifth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team earned its 10th shutout win of the season and third in-a-row over a Southeastern Conference opponent with a 7-0 victory over Auburn at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center Sunday. After taking the doubles point with convincing wins on the first two lines, the Commodores swept all six singles matches in straight sets. The Tigers struck the first blow in the match with an 8-1 win at third doubles. But the Commodores top two teams would strike back and secure the point for VU. The third-ranked pairing of seniors Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos captured an 8-3 victory over Petra Bercik and Carolina Ramirez at first doubles, and the duo of junior Audra Falk and freshman Amanda Fish gave the Dores a 1-0 team lead with their 8-1 win over Isabel Rosenbrock and Ashley Cowart at second doubles. The Dores tore into singles play and would not lose a set. At first singles, No. 25 Falk was the first off the court, registering a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bercik. Tsoubanos followed soon thereafter, defeating Liz Sauerborn at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-2. Fish, ranked No. 90 by the ITA, clinched the match for VU with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Rosenbrock at third singles. The 79th-ranked Schmandt would finish off Ramirez, 6-2, 6-3, while freshman Helene Stephens and sophomore Ashley Schellhas both used tiebreakers to capture straight-set wins on courts six and five, respectively. The Commodores (17-2, 7-1 SEC) remain at home next weekend and play host to No. 26 Tennessee and No. 4 Georgia at the Currey Tennis Center. No. 5 Vanderbilt 7, Auburn 0 Singles |
