Comeback Falls Short For No. 9 VU Lacrosse Against No. 7 Duke, 13-16 3-28-04

3/28/2004

DURHAM, N.C. — Despite six points each from seniors Michelle Allen and Lauren Peck, the ninth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team was unable to overcome seventh-ranked Duke in a 16-13 loss at Koskinen Stadium Sunday. The Commodores fell behind early in the match and were unable to comeback despite outscoring the Blue Devils, 9-6, in the second half.

Allen scored the game’s first goal only :22 seconds into the game to give the Dores an early lead. Duke replied by going on a six-goal run, including successful three free position shots, before senior Jess Roguski answered in the 10th minute off a Peck assist. The match’s first eight draw controls were turned into goals, with Vanderbilt trailing 6-2 at the 10-minute mark.

Roguski and Allen both would tally another VU score in the second half, but the Blue Devils netted four more goals to take a 10-4 advantage into halftime. Allen finished off a hat trick in the first minute of the second half, scoring on an 8-meter attempt. The teams traded goals for the half’s first 11 minute, with Peck and Allen each netting a pair for Vanderbilt.

Trailing 14-8 with 10 minutes remaining, the Commodores mounted a comeback. Vanderbilt was within four goals with five minutes to play after a goal by Peck and two from Roguski. The Blue Devils spread their offense out in an attempt to drain the clock, eventually scoring a goal in the 59th minute to take a 16-11 lead. Peck and Allen scored :14 seconds apart to bring the Commodores within striking distance, but they were unable to find the net again.

On the day, Peck tallied six points on four goals and two assists, while Allen contributed five goals and one assist. Roguski added four goals to the VU effort, while senior Christiana Serle contributed a pair of assists, her first at VU. Senior Joanna Mooney also had an assist, her second of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli made eight saves against seven goals in the game’s final 35 minutes. Bastinelli also picked up a pair of ground balls to aid the VU defense. Allen led the Commodores with three ground balls, while Roguski caused a pair of turnovers and Mooney controlled three draws. The game featured 45 fouls and three yellow cards.

Vanderbilt (5-2, 1-0 American Lacrosse Conference) will return to action on Sunday, April 4, in Baltimore, Md., against conference-rival Johns Hopkins. The match is scheduled to begin at Noon CT and will be televised by CSTV.
