No. 17 Vanderbilt Defeats No. 51 Alabama, 5-2 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The 17th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over Southeastern Conference foe Alabama at the UA Student Rec Courts Friday. The Commodores won the doubles point before taking straight-set singles wins on courts six, four and three to clinch the match. VU Head Coach Ken Flach mixed up his doubles lineup, which had dropped two of the last three points, with favorable results. Junior Scott Brown teamed up with senior Lewis Smith at first doubles for the second time this season, and the pair defeated the 42nd-ranked team of Stephen Mitchell and Chris Gostek, 8-6. At third doubles, senior Chad Harris joined junior Matt Lockin in an 8-2 victory over Eric Molnar and Mike Green which clinched the doubles point for Vanderbilt. The bottom of Vanderbilt’s lineup got things started in the right direction in singles. At sixth singles, Smith quickly defeated UA’s Green, 6-0, 6-1, to give the Commodores a 2-0 advantage. Senior Zach Dailey extended the VU lead to three by defeating Molnar, 6-4, 6-0, at fourth singles. Lockin clinched the Vanderbilt victory at third singles with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Gostek. Brown also would score for the Commodores, moving his dual-match record to 14-1 on the season and giving Vanderbilt its final 5-2 margin of victory. The Commodores (10-6, 4-2 SEC) will remain on the road this weekend, travelling to Auburn, Ala., Sunday to take on the 52nd-ranked Tigers. No. 17 Vanderbilt 5, No. 51 Alabama 2 Doubles Singles |
