Vanderbilt Sweeps Team and Individual Titles at Betsy Rawls Invitational 3/23/2004 Chris Brady sets a VU freshman record with her second title of the year AUSTIN, Texas — The Vanderbilt women’s golf team erased a six-stroke deficit and won its third tournament championship of the year today, riding the medalist performance of Chris Brady to capture the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational. The Commodores jumped from the third team position to edge the host University of Texas by two shots, 935 to 937. Cal was third, another shot behind while Southern Cal placed fourth at 941. Meanwhile, the freshman Brady was a wire-to-wire champion individually, firing rounds of 72-77-77 to beat Cal’s Sophia Sheridan by two shots. Brady had also won the Kentucky Wildcat Invitational last November, making her the first Commodore freshman in program history to win two tournaments in a single season. Senior Sarah Jacobs also made a big move today, leaping from 20th into 12th position with a two-over par 74. May Wood had a sparkling a 73 and Courtney Wood added a 79 to round out the scoring members of the team. Betsy Rawls Longhorns Invitational Final Team Standings Final Top-10 Individuals Vanderbilt Results Chris Brady Maintains Lead at Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational AUSTIN, Texas — Vanderbilt freshman Chris Brady had a second round 77 as she extended her lead to three strokes in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational Monday. Heading into Tuesday’s final round, Brady (72-77–149) has a three-shot lead over three players despite double-bogeying No. 18 Monday. Laura Cross of SMU, Catalina Marin of Southern California and Julie Tvede of Tulsa are in a three-way tie for second at 8-over-par 152. Brady, who shared medalist honors at Kentucky’s Wildcat Invitational in the Fall, is looking for her first outright title this season. Senior Sarah Jacobs shaved two strokes off her opening round 81 and moved into a tie for 20th place at 160. Classmate Courtney Wood is also tied for 20th at 79-81–160. Freshman Kristen Svicarovich also improved upon Sunday’s score with a second round 82. She sits in a tie for 52nd at 166. May Wood, who did not compete on Sunday, carded a 79 for the Commodores. In the race for the team title, Vanderbilt turned in a second consecutive 316 and gained one shot on team leader Texas. At 626, the Longhorns hold a slim one stroke lead on UNLV at 627. Cal moved into a tie for third with Vanderbilt after a tournament-low 311 team score on Monday. Tuesday’s final round will be a shotgun start at 8 a.m. After two days off split tees in threesomes, the top four teams will be playing together and starting on holes 1-4 of The Hills Country Club. Chris Brady Leads After First Round at Longhorn Invitational AUSTIN, Texas — Vanderbilt’s Chris Brady shot an even-par 72 to take the first round lead at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational. In the team standings, Vanderbilt sits in third place at 316. Vanderbilt started on No. 10 in Sunday’s split tee format and was among the first few schools to complete their rounds before a 30-minute rain delay halted play on the 6,248-yard, par 72 layout at The Hills Country Club. After going out in 2-over-par 38, Brady birdied both par 5s on the front side to get back to level par. The freshman from Cary, N.C., finished with three birdies and three bogeys on the day. Brady holds a two-stroke lead over Cassandra Kirkland of Arizona and Janice Olivencia of Texas. Vanderbilt’s Courtney Wood sits in a tie for 17th place after firing a 7-over-par 79. Sarah Jacobs and Kristen Svicarovich turned in rounds of 81 and 84 for the Commodores, respectively. The Commodores were forced to count all four scores when May Wood withdrew prior to Sunday’s round. Vanderbilt trails host Texas (309) by seven shots and UNLV (313) by three shots. Southern California is in fourth place at 318, while TCU and SMU are tied for fifth at 320. The second round will begin on Monday with an 8 a.m. CT start on split tees.
