Vanderbilt Gets Past Cornell, 9-8 3-21-04 3/21/2004 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 10th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team posted a 9-8 victory over non-conference opponent Cornell Sunday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex. Seniors Lauren Peck and Jess Roguski each contributed three points to the effort, with Peck scoring a hat-trick and Roguski adding two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist. The Commodores scored in the game’s fourth minute to take an early lead when senior Kelly Devlin assisted sophomore Kate Hickman on her 11th goal of the season. The Big Red tied the game in the seventh minute when Kristen Smith scored the first of five goals on the day. The entire game saw much of the same action, as Vanderbilt would take a slight lead before Cornell was able to tie the score — there were three ties in the game that lasted a total of six minutes, but the Commodores never trailed. Senior Michelle Allen scored on a free position shot in the eighth minute before Roguski tallied her first goal of the day in the 11th minute. Peck found the back of the net twice in the first half, with freshmen Kendall Thrift and Jennifer Tapscott each tallying their first career assists. Cornell would score late in the 29th minute to cut the deficit to 5-4 before halftime. Peck finished her hat trick in the 35th minute off an Allen feed before Cornell scored two goals in the 40th minute to tie the game at 6-6. But the Commodores answered less than a minute later when junior Kim Gianis tallied her first career assist on the third goal of the season by classmate Meg Spies. Vanderbilt held onto the 7-6 lead until the Big Red tied the match in 52nd minute. Again, the Dores were able to storm back. Senior Kelly Devlin scored off a Roguski pass in the 53rd minute to give Vanderbilt the lead for good. Roguski then scored an insurance goal in the 55th minute off an 8-meter attempt. The insurance goal became the game-winner when Kristen Smith tallied her fifth of the game in the 56th minute. But the Vanderbilt defense tightened and junior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli made a key save on a CU free position shot to help the Dores take the 9-8 victory. Bastinelli, who played only seven minutes in relief of freshman Brooke Shinaberry, also posted a caused turnover when she intercepted a Cornell pass into the crease. Shinaberry had four saves and a ground ball in 53 minutes of action. The Commodores were outdrawn on the day, 10-9, but managed to cause 15 turnovers to gain possession of the ball. Allen and senior Christiana Serle each caused three turnovers, while Allen and Gianis both picked up four ground balls. Roguski, Gianis and senior Bridget Morris each caused a pair of turnovers to help VU’s defense, which has held opponents to an average of less than seven goals in its last four games. Vanderbilt (5-1, 1-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference) returns to action next weekend with a trip to Durham, N.C., to face the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils on Sunday, March 28, at Noon CT.
