Ole Miss Defeats Vanderbilt in Come-From-Behind Win, 6-5, in Game Two of the SEC Series Opener

OXFORD, Miss. — The Vanderbilt Commodores were defeated by Ole Miss, 6-5, today, in a come-from-behind win at Swayze Field.  The Commodores led 5-0 entering the seventh inning.  The Rebels scored two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth, to narrow VU’s lead to two, 5-3.

With Vanderbilt leading 5-3, the Rebels scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the second game of the series.  With one away, Barry Gunther was hit by Commodore reliever Ryan Rote and was replaced by Drew Robinson as a pinch runner.  Robinson advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when Chris Coghlan hit a single to right field, narrowing VU’s lead to one, 5-4.  Charlie Babineaux hit a pinch hit blooper to shallow left field  advancing Coghlan to second.  Cooper Osteen hit a single to right field scoring Coghlan to tie the game.  Matt Tolbert then hit the right field wall with Babineaux scoring the game winner.

Sophomore right-hander Jensen Lewis went 7.1 innings for the Commodores allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits and striking out three.  Lewis allowed only three hits in the first six innings.

Sophomore right-hander Matt Buschmann provided relief in the seventh facing two batters and not allowing a hit while striking out one.  Rote picked up the loss entering the game in the ninth and giving up three runs (all earned) on four hits.

The Commodores left 11 runners on base, including three in the third inning.  Ole Miss stranded seven runners on base.

Anthony Cupps earned the win for the Rebels going 4.2 innings and giving up no runs on two hits and striking out three.  Ole Miss starter Stephen Head went 4.1 innings and gave up a career-high five runs (all earned) on 12 Commodore hits — another career high.

Junior shortstop Ryan Klosterman and sophomore second baseman Warner Jones each went 3-5 with Jones extending his hitting streak to 25 consecutive games.  Five different Commodores tallied an RBI in the game, including Jones, Cesar Nicolas, Mike Baxter, Tony Mansolino and Aaron Garza.

The final game of the series is tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:30 pm.
