Black & Gold Scrimmage Scheduled Saturday
Commodores Featured Event of Spring Practice Starts at 2:00 p.m. in Vanderbilt Stadium

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The annual Black and Gold Scrimmage, a featured attraction of Vanderbilt’s Spring Practice, is scheduled Saturday afternoon in Vanderbilt Stadium.  The scrimmage is free to Commodore fans.

The Commodores will start Saturday’s session at 2:00 p.m.  The actual scrimmage is expected to begin at approximately 2:40 p.m.

Vanderbilt cheerleaders will welcome Commodore fans at Gate 2, located near the intersection of Jess Neely Drive and Natchez Trace. Gates will open at 1:00 p.m.  A team roster will be distributed to all spectators.

Vanderbilt Head Coach Bobby Johnson said the Commodores are excited about getting a chance to show what they can do.  The head coach has been pleased with the team’s earlier practices this spring and believes the Commodores will put on a solid outing for their fans.

“The coaches and players are excited,” Johnson said.  “While the scrimmage is basically another practice, it’s also a great opportunity to show our fans what we’ve been doing this spring.  Our guys have been working hard trying to get better. I think our fans will see that Saturday.”

Like last year, a team score will not be recorded during the scrimmage.  Instead, the session will be a battle between the Commodore offense wearing white jerseys and the defense in black tops.

Johnson is looking for several redshirt freshmen and underclassmen from the 2003 season to step forward at the Black and Gold Scrimmage as legitimate contenders for important roles next season.

“A number of guys that redshirted last year or played sparingly are competing for a bigger role next year.  Those guys need to show they have improved at the scrimmage,” Johnson said.
