No. 4 VU Women’s Tennis Defeats MTSU, 5-2 3/15/2004 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The fourth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team rallied after a sluggish start to take a 5-2 victory over Middle Tennessee State at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center Monday. The Commodores lost the doubles point, but came back to win five of six singles matches. MTSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. The pairing of sophomore Ashley Schellhas and freshman Amanda Fish was the only VU team to win its doubles match. Schellhas and Fish took an 8-2 decision from Ana Maria Cibils and Emily Vest of Middle Tennessee to open the match, then watched as the Commodores lost at first and second doubles to drop the team point. But Vanderbilt bounced back quickly in singles play. The Commodores would take straight-set wins at five positions. Senior Aleke Tsoubanos started the comeback at third singles, defeating MTSU’s Carien Venter, 6-2, 6-4. The 80th-ranked Fish gave VU a 2-1 lead with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Laura McNamara at fourth singles. After a VU loss at second singles evened the match at 2-2, Commodore junior Audra Falk closed out 50th-ranked Manon Kruse at first singles, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Junior Annie Menees clinched the match for Vanderbilt, posting a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Ana Maris Cibils at fifth singles. At sixth singles, the match between VU’s Schellhas and MTSU’s Vest was delayed due to limited court availability. Once underway, Schellhas was able to make short work of Vest, earning a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win to give Vanderbilt its final 5-2 tally. The Commodores (13-2, 4-1 in the Southeastern Conference) will hit the road this weekend to face Georgia Tech and conference rival LSU on March 19 and 21, respectively. No. 4 Vanderbilt def.
