No. 10 VU Lacrosse Shuts Down Wildcats, 10-3 3-15-04 3/15/2004 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 10th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team posted a second-half shutout en route to a 10-3 victory over New Hampshire at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex Monday. The Commodore held UNH scoreless for nearly 31 minutes while connecting on their final five shots to secure the non-conference win. Rain began to fall 30 minutes prior to the match’s opening draw, and the poor weather conditions played a factor throughout the match. The two teams struggled to control the ball early and only one goal was scored in the game’s opening 20 minutes. The Wildcats got on the board in the seventh minute on a goal by Krisitin Blanchette. The Commodores missed their first seven shots, but eventually evened the score in the 23rd minute on a goal by senior Lauren Peck. A minute later, VU would take its first lead when senior Jess Roguski scored off a feed from classmate Michelle Allen. Another Peck goal gave Vanderbilt a 3-1 lead before UNH clawed back to tie the game at the 29:05 mark. After the Commodores won the ensuing draw, senior Kelly Devlin took her defender one-on-one and scored with 21 seconds remaining in the half to give Vanderbilt a 4-3 advantage during the break. In the second half, the VU defense tightened up and the offense began to find its rhythm. The Commodore defense, paced by three caused turnovers by Allen, did not allow a goal during the entire second stanza. Freshman goalkeeper Brooke Shinaberry contributed five saves to the effort. “I’m very proud of the way our defense played in the second half,” VU Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “They really dug in and gave a great effort to keep [UNH] off the board for the entire 30 minutes.” Sophomore Kate Hickman scored all three of her goals in the second half, while Roguski was able to finish off a hat-trick of her own with two second-half tallies. Devlin contributed two assists to the cause, including one to sophomore Bryn Sedlacek. The Commodores ended the game by scoring on their last five shots over the match’s final 12 minutes. With Roguski at center, the Commodores controlled face-offs all day, ending the match with a 12-3 tally in draw controls. Hickman picked up three draw controls in the match, with Allen and seniors Christiana Serle and Joanna Mooney all grabbing a pair. The Commodores (4-1, 1-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference) remain at home this weekend for a match against Cornell at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex on Sunday, March 21, at 1 p.m. CT.
