No. 10 VU Lacrosse Blasts No. 16 Bulldogs, 17-11 3-13-04

3/13/2004 Senior Lauren Peck scores season-high six goals.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 10th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team earned a strong 17-11 victory over No. 16 Yale at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex Saturday. The Commodores were impressive on both sides of the ball, as senior attack Lauren Peck scored six goals and freshman goalkeeper Brooke Shinaberry made 13 saves.

Five Commodores contributed at least four offensive points to the effort, led by Peck’s six goal and one assist for a career-high seven points. Seniors Michelle Allen, Kelly Devlin and Jess Roguski each added five points. Roguski scored four goals and added an assist; Allen scored two goals and had three assists; and Devlin scored one goal and dished out a career-high four assists.

Vanderbilt scored the game’s first goal at the 1:24 mark on a free position shot by Peck and never trailed. That goal marked the 100th point of Peck’s collegiate career. The games first five draws led to goals, and Vanderbilt took a 3-2 lead at the 7:14 mark when Roguski scored off a feed from Devlin.

The Commodores expanded their lead two minutes later when senior Christiana Serle’s ground ball and subsequent clear made its way to Hickman, who found Roguski in front of the net to give VU a 4-2 advantage. Roguski’s 100th career point at Vanderbilt would put the Dores up for good.

Yale hung close, but Vanderbilt closed out the first half with a pair of goals from Peck and Roguski to take a 9-6 lead to the break. Vanderbilt connected on nine of its first 10 shots, and on 17 of 20 shots overall — a vast improvement from the Dores’ 6 of 31 performance a week ago.

The second half saw much of the same, with the two teams separated by a few goals. Bulldog Alessandra Croffy scored a goal at the 46:56 to pull Yale within two. The Vanderbilt run that followed left no doubt to the afternoon’s result. Commodore tallies from Devlin, sophomore Bryn Sedlacek, Peck and two from Hickman gave Vanderbilt a comfortable cushion and the final 17-11 advantage.

On the day, VU goalkeeper Brooke Shinaberry, making only her second career start, stopped 13 shots in 60 minutes of action. For the Bulldogs, Lonnie Sarnell and Casey Littlefield both saw action, making two saves between them.

The Bulldogs were led by Miles Whitman, the team’s leading scorer this season, who contributed four goals and two assists in the game. Whitman scored three times in the first half, but was held scoreless after the 32nd minute of the game.

In the fourth meeting of the series, Vanderbilt earned its first victory over Yale, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2003. The Commodores (3-1, 1-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference) will remain at home to play host to New Hampshire at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex on Monday, March 15, at 3 p.m. CT.
