Commodores manage just three hits

WACO, Texas — Baylor’s Mark McCormick allowed one hit and no runs in helping lead the Bears to a 12-0 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores tonight at the Baylor Ballpark.

In rainy conditions and 55 degree temperatures, junior left hander Jeremy Sowers lost his first game of the season giving up eight runs (all earned) on nine hits in three innings of play.  He struck out five batters while walking one and hitting two others.

“It’s just an uncommon thing, but I know he will be better next time,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said.  “We hit 10 balls in the first six innings and they (Baylor) made ESPN plays out there.  We just didn’t have it tonight.”

Baylor began the game with a double from their lead off hitter Drew Sutton.  Michael Griffin then singled and advanced to second on the throw moving Sutton to third.  With two away, Josh Ford hit a single up the middle scoring the two Baylor players.

The Bears added two runs in the second, four in the third and four more in the fifth inning.

Freshman leftfielder Aaron Garza broke up McCormick’s no hitter when he doubled to deep left center field in the fifth inning.  In the sixth inning, junior center fielder Antoan Richardson led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch but was left stranded on base.

Sophomore right-hander Blake Owen pitched the fourth and fifth innings giving up four hits and four runs (all earned) with two strikeouts and three hit batters.

Freshman left-hander Greg Moviel pitched the final three innings giving up no hits and striking out five.  He walked four batters and hit one batter.

Sophomore Warner Jones extended his hitting streak to 20 consecutive games when he hit a single in the seventh inning.

The Commodores and Bears continue the three-game series tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 pm.

Vanderbilt is now 11-2, while Baylor ends a six-game losing streak with a 5-11 record.

Baylor leads the series 2-0 over Vanderbilt.  In the first meeting in 1999, the Bears posted a 10-4 victory over the Commodores and starting pitcher, future MLB all-star Mark Prior.
