Freije Gaining Numerous Honors as Postseason Begins
Hundley Named SEC’s Sixth Man of the Year

With anticipation building for postseason play, a pair Vanderbilt men’s basketball players are garnering recognition for their production during the regular season.

Senior forward Matt Freije has been named First Team All-Southeastern Conference by the league’s coaches and the Associated Press. He also was tabbed a Fourth Team All-America by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA) and All-District 4 by the United States Basketball Writers’ Association.

Senior guard Scott Hundley was named the SEC’s Sixth Man of the Year by the league’s coaches.

Freije finished the regular season leading the SEC in scoring with 19.1 points a game. Vanderbilt’s all-time leading scorer is averaging 22.7 points and 4.3 rebounds over his last six games. During the stretch, he is shooting 40.8 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from behind the arc. Freije also ranks third in the SEC in free throw shooting at 81.1 percent. The native of Overland Park, Kan. Has led Vanderbilt in soring 18 times this season and tied his career-high in scoring with 32 points against Indiana (Nov. 24) and Alabama (Feb. 18).

Hundley has spearheaded the Commodore reserves. The Georgetown, Ky., native leads all Commodore reserves, averaging 7.3 points and 4.2 rebounds. He scored a season-high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting against IUPUI on Dec. 3. He posted his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds at Tennessee on Jan. 14. He helped Vanderbilt seal up two home wins with a pair of late free throws against Kentucky (Jan. 31) and Tennessee (Feb. 3). He has spearheaded Vanderbilt’s bench that outscored its opponents’ reserves 691-392 during the regular season, averaging 25.6 points, 13.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game.

The Commodores begin play in the Southeastern Conference Thursday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised by Jefferson Pilot Sports.
