Women’s Golf Finishes Eighth at Lady Gator Invitational

3/9/2004

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Vanderbilt finished eighth Tuesday at the University of Florida’s Lady Gator golf tournament.  Duke won the team championship by a wide margin over Ohio State.

The Commodores were once again led by freshman Kristen Svicarovich, who had a five-over 75 to finish in a tie for 12th place, her best collegiate tournament to date.

“Kristen did a great job,” said Coach Martha Freitag.  “Her attitude, grit and fight almost put her in the Top 10.  We just weren’t able to support her effort.”

Freitag said the 6,701-yard UF Golf Course was difficult with long par 4’s and light but swirling winds that played tricks at times.

“The players that scored well in this tournament were the ones who handled difficult situations — not allowing one bogey to snowball into bigger problems.  It was as much a mental test as physical test,” Freitag said.

Duke had the first three individuals, led by Brittany Lang at six-over par 216.

Vanderbilt Drops to Seventh After 36 Holes

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Vanderbilt Coach Martha Freitag had expected her seventh ranked women’s golf team to rebound from its fifth place opening day performance at the Lady Gator Invitational.

Unfortunately for the Commodores, things got worse as they struggled through a difficult second day with a 317 total, putting them in seventh place in the 15-team field.

Freshman Kristin Svicarovich was the team leader Monday with a six-over par 76.  Courtney Wood shot 79, Sarah Jacobs came in with an 80 while May Wood and Chris Brady struggled in at 82.

Svicarovich’s day was highlighted by a steady one-over par backside, which included a birdie on 14 against a pair of bogeys.

May Wood had one of those nightmarish back nines with a bogey, two double bogeys and a quadruple bogey 8 on No. 14.

Despite their problems, the Commodores are just seven shots out of third place.  Duke leads team standings at 588, followed by Ohio State at 608 and Michigan State at 616.

Duke’s Anna Grzebien and Brittany Lang are atop the individual leader board at 145.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes Tuesday.
