No. 4 VU Women’s Tennis Wins At South Carolina, 4-3

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The fourth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory over Southeastern Conference-rival South Carolina on Sunday afternoon. Senior Kelly Schmandt clinched the win for the Commodores by taking a three-set decision at second singles.
Vanderbilt started the day by winning the doubles point. The second-ranked team of Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos were victorious at first doubles, 8-2, while the 10th-ranked team of Audra Falk and Annie Menees won their match at second doubles, 8-3. In singles, the Commodores would extend their lead to 3-0 with a pair of straight-set victories at the fourth and sixth positions. Sophomore Ashley Schellhas was the first off the court, winning 6-2, 6-2, on court six. Tsoubanos followed closely behind with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at fourth singles. The Gamecocks would tighten the score to 3-2 with wins on courts three and one. At third singles, freshman Amanda Fish suffered her first loss of the 2004 dual match season. The Commodores won first sets at second and fifth singles, but South Carolina fought back to even both matches at a set apiece. Schmandt would earn the match-clinching point for VU at the second position, knocking off USC’s Laura Ganzer, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-4. The Commodores (12-2, 4-1 in the SEC) will have a week off before playing host to Middle Tennessee State on Monday, March 15, at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center.
