Women Golfers to Lady Gator Invitational 3/5/2004 Coach Martha Freitag and a team of five Commodores are headed to Gainesville for the upcoming Lady Gator Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida. The Commodores, rated seventh in the latest golfweek.com rankings, are coming off their impressive championship at the University of Arizona’s Wildcat Invitational. Vanderbilt will be tested in this 54-hole tournament by another strong field, that includes Arkansas, Auburn, Central Florida, Duke, Florida and Florida State. Also competing are Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Purdue, South Florida, Tennessee and Virginia. Vanderbilt’s entries include May Wood, who won the Arizona Wildcat Invitational and was named the SEC Golfer of the Week for the second time in her brief collegiate career. The other Commodores include senior Sarah Jacobs and Courtney Wood and freshmen Chris Brady and Kristen Svicarovich. Jacobs is ranked 14th nationally and May Wood 16th by golfweek.com In addition to a tough tournament field with some of the best teams from most of the major conferences in the country, Vanderbilt will also see a renovated golf course that has been toughened up. The UF Golf Course is now 6,701 yards long and while still a par 70, features long par 3 holes and a very tricky seventeenth hole that is expected to produce as many double bogeys as birdies. Florida has won three of the last four Lady Gator titles. A year ago,Kristin Tamulis of Florida State won individually with a five-over par 215. Saturday is the practice day with tournament play beginning Sunday and concluding Tuesday. |
