The Vanderbilt men’s golf squad registered a third-place finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla., after a final round of 297 gave the ‘Dores a three-day total of 28-over par, 892. Georgia State, the the leader after yesterday’s second round, picked up the team title by five strokes over Central Florida, with the Black and Gold eight shots back in third.

Alabama-Birmingham’s Tigh VanLeeuwen defeated Kellen Altman of College of Charleston for the individual crown on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Luke List, a native of Ringgold, Ga., led the way for the Commodores with the fifth top-five finish of his brief career after tying Georgia State’s Kasper Jorgensen and Jonathan Fricke for third-place at 1-over par, 217. The Black and Gold rookie closed with a 1-under par 71 to move up the leaderboard from a tie for fifth after the second round to the deadlock at third position.

Juniors Mark Donnell (Mobile, Ala.) and Lance Goodson (Birmingham, Ala.) each posted top-20 finishes as the duo completed play tied for 15th and 18th, respectively. Donnell completed the third round with a 4-over 76, while Goodson carded a 2-over 74.

Sophomore Will Armstrong (Austin, Texas), playing in just his second tournament of the year for Vanderbilt, posted the best finish of his career at VU (tied for 27th) by carding rounds of 75-77-78 for a three-day total of 230. His opening round 3-over par 75 marked the lowest 18-hole total of his career, while the 230 was Armstrong’s lowest score for 54 holes.

Ponte Vedra, Fla., native Ben McClung fired a 4-over 76 to finish his tournament tied for 31st at 232.

The Black and Gold will return to the links over Mar. 7-9 at the Hyatt Cerromar Beach Intercollegiate in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Results will be available here at www.vucommodores.com after each day’s round is completed.

Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Tied for Third After Second Round of Seminole Intercollegiate

Coach Press McPhaul’s Vanderbilt men’s golf squad dropped to third position after the second round of the Seminole Intercollegiate by firing a 19-over par, 307 for a two-round total of (+19) 595. The Commodores trail Georgia State by just four strokes heading into Tuesday’s final round at the Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee, Fla.

The two-day event is being contested on a par-72/6,847-yard layout and boasts five squads currently ranked in the top 50 of the Golfweek-Sagarin rankings.

Freshman Luke List (68-78=146), a Ringgold, Ga., native, continues to set the pace for the Black and Gold by tying for fifth-place overall at 2-over par 146, five strokes out of the lead, with Kasper Jorgensen and Ty Harris of Georgia State and John Eades of Maryland.

After completing the opening tour of the course in 17th position, junior Mark Donnell (Mobile, Ala.) fired a second round 75 to improve into a tie for 12th. Junior Lance Goodson (Birmingham, Ala.) dropped into a deadlock for 22nd after an 81 gave him a two-round total of 152. Sophomore Will Armstrong (Austin, Texas), in only his second tournament of the year for the Black and Gold, and junior Ben McClung (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) both carded afternoon 77’s to tie for 22nd and 38th, respectively.

Team-leader Georgia State boasts three of the top five golfers in the individual standings, after the afternoon’s second round, with Jonathan Fricke in a tie for third and Jorgensen and Harris knotted with VU’s List in fifth position. College of Charleston’s Kellen Altman leads the individual race at 3-under par 141, following rounds of 73-68.

Final round action is scheduled to get underway on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m.

Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Leads After Opening Round of Seminole Intercollegiate

Vanderbilt men’s golf squad, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Press McPhaul, opened the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla., with an even-par 288 to lead Georgia State by six strokes heading into Monday afternoon’s second round. Freshman Luke List carded a round of 4-under par 68 to tie John Eades of Maryland for the individual lead after the initial 18 holes of play.

The second round was scheduled to commence at 12:30 p.m. as the teams will play 36 holes on the tournament’s opening day.

Junior Lance Goodson (Birmingham, Ala.), who led Vanderbilt’s squad individually at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship (Feb. 8-10) to open the spring season, began the tournament with a 1-under par 71 to rate fourth, while junior Mark Donnell (Mobile, Ala.) and sophomore Will Armstrong (Austin, Texas) completed Vanderbilt’s scoring contingent by carding a 2-over 74 and a 3-over 75 to rate in a tie for 17th and 24th, respectively. Junior Ben McClung (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) fired a 7-over 79 to tie for 46th.

The tournament, being contested on the par-72, 6,847-yard Golden Eagle Country Club course, boasts a field which includes five teams currently ranked in the Golfweek-Sagarin Top 50 rankings, including #39 Georgia State, #41 Vanderbilt, #52 Central Florida, #54 Alabama-Birmingham and #55 North Florida.
