Roguski Named American Lacrosse Conference Player of the Week 3-2-04

3/2/2004 Senior earns honor for contribution to victory over league-rival Penn State.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt senior Jess Roguski (Baltimore, Md./Liberty H.S.) was named the Player of the Week in the American Lacrosse Conference for her performance in the Commodores’ 16-12 victory over then-No. 10 Penn State on Sunday, Feb. 29. This marks the first time Roguski has been recognized by the conference, and the fourth time a Commodore has won the honor in the league’s first three seasons.

“Jess has an amazing presence on the field for us,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “She controls the ball in the midfield with her ball-handling as well as her draw controls. Jess creates opportunities on the defensive end with her aggressive and intimidating style and also is very consistent on the attack.”

Roguski scored three goals and added one assist against ALC-rival Penn State. Three of her four points came in the 9-1 second-half run that clinched the victory for Vanderbilt. The preseason All-Conference selection also pulled down six draw controls in the match as the Commodores outdrew the Nittany Lions, 18-11.

In the first two games of her senior season, Roguski has tallied five goals, one assist and nine draw controls, along with a pair of ground balls and two caused turnovers. A 2003 co-captain, Roguski also earned recognition from womenslacrosse.com, as she was named to the site’s weekly honor roll.

Roguski and the 11th-ranked Commodores (1-1, 1-0 in the ALC) travel to Palo Alto, Calif., this weekend to face 17th-ranked Stanford (3-2) at Maloney Field on Sunday, March 7, at 3 p.m. CT.
