Jeremy Sowers Named SEC Pitcher of the Week 3/1/2004
Jeremy Sowers Named SEC Pitcher of the Week NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt’s Jeremy Sowers has been named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week for the third time in his career. Sowers allowed a single to Maryland’s first hitter and then retired 22 of the next 24 batters and struck out a season-high 11 in the Commodore’s third consecutive shutout, an 8-0 decision over the Terrapins. Only three Maryland players reached base and none of them passed first base. Sowers did not allow a walk in eight innings of play. The one-hitter is the fewest hits Sower’s has allowed in a start in his career – the previous mark was three in the 2003 season opener against Old Dominion (eight innings) and vs. Iowa in 2002 (seven innings). It is the second consecutive week a Commodore pitcher has won the honor. Sophomore left-hander Ryan Mullins earned the honor last week. It is the first time Vanderbilt has had baseball players earn pitcher of the week honors in consecutive weeks. Sower’s has been named SEC Pitcher of the Week two previous times – April 8, 2003 and Feb. 25, 2002. |
