OXFORD, Miss. – The fifth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team won its 10th match of the season and improved its Southeastern Conference record to 2-0 with a 5-2 win against No. 30 Ole Miss Friday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
The Commodores (10-1) got a pair of wins from their two ranked doubles teams to take an early 1-0 lead. The pairing of juniors Audra Falk and Annie Menees, ranked No. 10 in the ITA’s most recent poll, took care of business at second doubles, defeating Sabrina Peppl and Audra Adams, 8-1. The second-ranked duo of seniors Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos secured the doubles point for Vanderbilt on center court, where they beat Rebels Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis, 8-6. With a 1-0 lead, the Commodores came out strong and took four first sets in singles to set the tone for the remainder of the match. No. 87 Tsoubanos expanded VU’s advantage, defeating UM’s Tomatis at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-1. The Rebels would earn a point when Florencia Basile defeated sophomore Ashley Schellhas at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-3, but Vanderbilt’s 54th-ranked Schmandt quickly turned the momentum back to the Commodores with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at second singles over Harboe. The Commodores held a 3-1 lead with three matches still playing. At first singles, Falk would fall in straight sets to No. 96 Carlotti, 6-4, 6-3. The Rebels were within a point, but freshman Amanda Fish would quickly close out the Vanderbilt win. At third singles, No. 65 Fish defeated UM’s Peppl, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the match. Menees, playing sixth singles, would tack on another team point, defeating Emily Ladyman, 7-5, 6-3, to give Vanderbilt its final 5-2 tally.
