May Wood named SEC Golfer of the Week 2/27/2004 The Southeastern Conference today named Vanderbilt’s May Wood as its Golfer of the Week. The Chattanooga sophomore won the University of Arizona’s Wildcat Invitational on Wednesday, boosting the Commodores to the team championship in the process. Wood fired steady rounds of 70-70-69 to finish the tournament four-under par, three shots ahead of the University of California’s Sophia Sheridan. The two had entered the 18th hole tied but the long-hitting Wood made eagle while Sheridan struggled to a bogey. The conference honor is the second for May, who won the award last April after finishing as co-medalist of the Bryan National Collegiate. Vanderbilt, ranked ninth in the latest Golfstat.com poll, has now won two tournaments. Last October the Commodores won Kentucky’s Wildcat Invitational. May Wood was a three-time Tennessee state champion. She has a rich history of tournament success, including titles in the 2002 North and South Championship at Pinehurst and the 2001 North and South Junior. She was the 2001 Tennessee Women’s Amateur Player of the Year. Vanderbilt’s next tournament action will be March 7-9 at the Lady Gator in Gainesville. |
