Senior needs just six points to set VU career scoring record

Vanderbilt senior forward Matt Freije continues to receive accolades for a pair of outstanding performances last week. Freije was named Player of the Week by ESPN.com and by “Wooden Watch,” a weekly promotional release highlighting the top college basketball players in consideration for the John R. Wooden Award.

Freije helped the Commodores (17-6, 6-6 in the Southeastern Conference) grab two important wins over Alabama and No. 24 LSU. Against the Crimson Tide, Freije tied a career-high when he netted 32 points in Vanderbilt’s 70-67 win on Feb. 18. He made 7-of-18 field goal attempts, including 5-of-10 three-point tries. He also converted 13-of-15 free throw attempts, including four inside the final two minutes of the game to secure the win.  Three days later, he led the Commodores with a game-high 22 points against LSU on Feb. 21. Freije made 9-of-20 field goal attempts, including a trio of three-pointers.

The 6-10, 249-pound native of Overland Park, Kan., was named Co-SEC Player of the Week on Monday along with Alabama’s Kennedy Winston.

Freije needs six points at Ole Miss on Wednesday to become Vanderbilt’s all-time scorer. Game time for Vanderbilt’s contest with Ole Miss is 7 p.m. CT.
