No. 16 Vanderbilt Lacrosse’s Rally Falls Short Against No. 3 Virginia 2-22-04 2/22/2004 Second-half drought spoils Commodores’ upset bid. NASHVILLE — The 16th-ranked Vanderbilt lacrosse team came up just short in its season-opening upset bid of No. 3 Virginia Sunday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex. The Commodores took an early 5-3 lead against the Cavaliers, who then went on a nine-goal run, including five scores from junior Amy Appelt, over the next 31 minutes. Vanderbilt notched the first goal in the second minute of play, when sophomore Kate Hickman took a feed from senior Lauren Peck and fired it into the back of the net. Virginia would respond one minute later to tie the game. The opening minutes of the half were filled with long possessions as the teams took turns controlling the ball. Peck contributed to four goals in the first half, scoring a pair and assisting on two more. Vanderbilt took the lead in the 17th minute when senior Jess Roguski scored off a Peck feed. A minute later, senior Michelle Allen would find the back of the net on a free position shot to give the Commodores a two goal lead, 5-3. The Cavaliers scored two goals in the next 11 minutes to take the game to halftime knotted at 5-5. In the second half, Virginia came out and scored four goals in the first eight minutes to force the Commodores to call a timeout. The Cavaliers would rattle off three more goals and lead 12-5 before the Dores were able to regroup and again find the net. Peck’s goal in the 50th minute broke a scoreless streak of 32 minutes for Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt would score three more times, including tallies from senior Kelly Devlin, Roguski and Allen, to cut the UVA lead to three goals with four minutes to play. But the rally would fall short, as Virginia won draw controls and beat Vanderbilt’s pressing defense twice in the final 3:35 to secure the 14-10 victory. On the day, the senior duo of Peck and Allen combined for 10 points — each tallying hat-tricks and a pair of assists. Roguski helped Vanderbilt control the face-off for most of the day, winning three draws while sending four to senior Bridget Morris and three to junior Kim Gianis. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli stopped three shots over the first 38 minutes of the game. Freshman Brooke Shinaberry also recorded three saves in the game’s final 22 minutes. Virginia’s Pfeiffer made six saves on the day and contributed an assist on a hail mary pass to a streaking Appelt midway through the second half. Vanderbilt (0-1) returns to action next Sunday, Feb. 29, when No. 10 Penn State comes to Nashville to open the Commodores’ American Lacrosse Conference schedule. The match is scheduled to begin at Noon CT. Goals Assists Goalkeeping Shots: UVA 21; VU 22 Scoring Summary SECOND HALF |
