Vensherrie Campbell Sets Weight Throw Record
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Vanderbilt sophomore Latisha Bryant ran the fourth fastest 600 meters in Commodore history while winning the event Saturday at the Ohio State University Scarlet & Grey Invitational.
Bryant led a Commodore sweep in the event with a personal best of 1:32.78. Only three others in team history have run faster, topped by the 1:31.43 effort by All-American Michele Baskin in 1998. Bryant was followed in the event by senior Vanessa Lagios in second, sophomore Anna-Laura Morgan in third and senior Mary Baldwin in fourth. Other Commodore highlights were provided by senior Vensherrie Campbell, sophomore Amanda Mullins-Hall and freshman Debbie Huss. Campbell set a new team mark in the weight throw with a throw of 58’3.75″. The effort, good for sixth place overall, smashed her former team record of 54’7.5″ established last year while winning the MTSU Blue Raider Invitational. Mullins-Hall won the 200-meter dash in a personal best of 25.33 and finished as the top collegiate runner in the 60-meter hurdles. Her 8.47-hurdle effort matched a season best, though she needs to run under 8.45 at the SEC Championships next week to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Huss won her first collegiate indoor race, capturing the mile with a personal best of 5:08.15. Huss was followed by senior Jocelyn Theriault, who ran 5:08.72 in the runnerup finish.
In other action involving Commodore student-athletes: ? Freshman Amy Huss set a personal best of 10:39.63 in the 3,000-meter run while finishing second overall. ? Junior Josie Hahn prepped for the SEC Indoor Championships by tying for second place in the high jump with a leap of 5’6.5″. ? Junior pole vaulter Paige Roberts barely missed topping the 12-foot mark, settling for a third place finish after clearing 11’5.75″. Roberts holds both indoor and outdoor vault records for the Commodores, but is yet to reach the 12-foot barrier.
