Vanderbilt Upsets No. 15 LSU, 61-55 2-19-04

2/19/2004 Carla Thomas leads the way with 22 points, 11 boards and four blocks

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP)Carla Thomas recorded her second double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team to a 61-55 upset of No. 15 LSU, Thursday night.

Vanderbilt (17-7, 5-6 Southeastern Conference) was aggressive offensively. Both teams shot 40 percent, but the Commodores made 5-of-13 3-pointers to LSU’s 2-of-7, and 14 second-chance points to five for the Tigers.

The Commodores also were tenacious defensively. They outrebounded LSU 41-32, allowing the Tigers only eight offensive boards. Vanderbilt had 11 steals to LSU’s seven.

LSU (20-5, 8-3) had won 13 straight home games – the second longest streak in the SEC. The Tigers also had won five straight going into the game. Vanderbilt had lost four in a row.

Abi Ramsey scored 17 points for Vanderbilt including 5-of-9 3-point shots.

Seimone Augustus led LSU with 18 points, Temeka Johnson had 14, and Wendlyn Jones 10.

Jones cut the Commodores’ lead to three points, hitting a pair of free throws with 3:06 left. But a 3-pointer by Ramsey made it 56-50 with 2:17 remaining, and the Commodores were never in trouble after that.

Vanderbilt did not look like a slumping team in the first half. Although LSU tied the score twice, the Commodores led for most of the half, and held a 33-24 edge at the break.

LSU was without coach Sue Gunter, who will miss the rest of the games because of lung problems and acute bronchitis. Gunter will continue to participate in film sessions and practices at her own discretion for the Lady Tigers.
