Vanderbilt Holds Off Alabama, 70-67 TUSCALOOSA, AL – Matt Freije poured in a game-high 32 points while leading the Vanderbilt Commodores to a 70-67 victory over Alabama at Coleman Coliseum Wednesday night. Dawid Przybyszewski and Corey Smith both tallied 10 points for Vanderbilt (16-6, 5-6 SEC), who has won two of its last three matchups. The Commodores also won their first SEC road game of the year and snapped a 14-game conference losing streak away from Memorial Gym. Kennedy Winston posted 17 points and grabbed six boards for Alabama (12-10, 4-7), which has lost six of its last seven contests. Chuck Davis netted 16 points, while Earnest Shelton added 15 points and pulled down six boards in the losing effort. Emmett Thomas chipped in 11 points for the Crimson Tide, which had 16 costly turnovers. The Commodores netted 7-of-12 shots taken from long range in the opening frame and used a 21-9 run early in the half, to take a commanding 42-24 lead into the break. Despite shooting just 28.6 percent from the floor in the second stanza, Vanderbilt connected on 14-of-18 shots from the foul line and captured the three-point victory. Vanderbilt netted 41.2 percent of its shots from the field in the game, while the Crimson Tide made only 40 percent. |
