Vanderbilt Lacrosse Travels to South of the Border Exhibition Tournament 2-13-04 2/13/2004 Commodores will face five opponents on Saturday CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team travels to North Carolina this weekend to take part in the South of the Border exhibition tournament on Saturday, Feb. 14. The event features shortened games played among the nation’s top teams in preparation for the fast-approaching 2004 regular season. The Valentine’s Day schedule for Vanderbilt includes matches against North Carolina, Richmond, Georgetown, Albany and Longwood. The event is hosted jointly by UNC and Duke, but all five of the Commodores’ matches will take place at the Tarheels’ Fetzer Field. “The South of the Border tournament is a great event every year,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Cathy Swezey said. “It gives us the opportunity to identify and work on our weaknesses, but also to feel good about our strengths. It’s great preparation for our season and we look forward to the opportunity to get our feet wet.” The Commodores will compete in full-sided (12-on-12) matches that are scheduled for 30 minutes each — half of a regulation match. Over 30 teams are signed on for this year’s tournament, including a squad from Canada and another from Japan. Vanderbilt, which received a pre-season ranking of No. 16 earlier this week, will open the 2004 regular season by playing host to another SOTB competitor, second-ranked Virginia, on Sunday, Feb. 22, at Noon CT, in the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex. |
