No. 8 Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis Falls To No. 16 Ohio State, 4-3 COLUMBUS, Ohio — The eighth-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to 16th-ranked Ohio State at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center Friday. The Commodores will remain in Columbus and look to rebound against Michigan State Saturday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. CT. The Commodores stumbled out of the gate, dropping the doubles point. The pairing of senior Zach Dailey and sophomore Greg Sossaman were triumphant at second doubles, 9-8 (4), over the 38th-ranked pair of Green and Wilson. But Vanderbilt would drop matches at first and third doubles and be hit with a 1-0 team deficit. The Buckeyes widened the gap with a pair of victories at the first two singles positions. Top-ranked Jeremy Wurtzman defeated VU’s No. 55 Chad Harris, 6-2, 6-2, while Buckeye Joey Atas defeated No. 27 Matt Lockin, 6-1, 6-3. Vanderbilt pushed toward a comeback with wins at third and fourth singles. No. 45 Dailey was victorious on court three, defeating OSU’s Chris Klingemann, 6-4, 6-4. Junior Scott Brown, ranked No. 46, remained undefeated in dual-match play with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Buckeye Devin Mullings. Ohio State would seal the upset victory at fifth singles, where Dennis Mertens defeated VU senior Lewis Smith in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
