VU Women’s Team Teaches Sport To Memphis Teens

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For the third consecutive year, the Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team held a January clinic at Hutchison School in Memphis for girls in grades 5-12. Six student-athletes and two coaches made the three-hour trip down Interstate-40 in order to promote the sport of lacrosse in southwest Tennessee.

“We had a lot of fun in Memphis,” Vanderbilt Assistant Coach Megan Riley said. “And I think the girls learned a lot. The sport is really growing in southwest Tennessee. I think these clinics are a great way for our team to support that growth. It’s great to see these communities sharing our love of lacrosse.”

Commodore seniors Liz Exline, Joanna Mooney, Lauren Peck and Jess Roguski joined sophomores Kim Gianis and Kate Hickman to teach drills designed to emphasize the fundamentals of the sport. The Vanderbilt student-athletes also had an opportunity to put on a shooting demonstration, showing-off their abilities to score with the “three P’s” — placement, power and pizzazz.

The girls from Hutchison School learned the basics of sound offensive and defensive practice, and by the end of the afternoon were able to participate in a full-field scrimmage. Riley and fellow-assistant Susan Ellis used the opportunity to speak with local coaches.

Back in Nashville, Vanderbilt has been busy preparing for the start of its 2004 season, which begins with a home match against Virginia at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex on Sunday, Feb. 22, at Noon CT. The Commodores travel to North Carolina this weekend to take part in the South of the Border exhibition tournament.
