Seniors Chad Harris and Lewis Smith teamed up to defeat their second top ten opponent in as many matches, downing Duke’s second-ranked duo of Ludovic Walker and Jason Zimmerman, 8-4. On Friday, the Commodore duo defeated 10th-ranked K.C. Corkery and James Pade of Stanford. Duke took second and third doubles, however, by scores of 8-3 and 8-5, respectively, to take an early lead in the match. In singles action, the two squads split a pair of straight-set decisions at the fourth and sixth positions. Junior Scott Brown, ranked 46th by the ITA, claimed a team point for the Commodores by defeating Zimmerman, 6-2, 7-5, at the fourth spot. Brown was the only Dore to win all three of his matches in Seattle. Freshman Nathan Sachs dropped his match at sixth singles, giving Duke a 2-1 advantage. The Blue Devils would solidify the match on the top two courts. VU’s 55th-ranked Harris took the first set against Philip King, 6-3, but King battled back to win the second set by an identical score before winning the third at love. At second singles, Commodore junior Matt Lockin split sets with the seventh-ranked Walter before succumbing in the third and final set. The Commodores travel to Columbus, Ohio, next weekend to meet a pair of Big Ten foes. Vanderbilt will face No. 58 Michigan State on Saturday, Feb. 14, and No. 15 Ohio State, led by top-ranked Jeremy Wurtzman, on Sunday, Feb. 15. 2004 USTA/ITA National Team Indoors Doubles Singles No. 4 Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis Upended By No. 5 Stanford, 4-3 SEATTLE, Wash. — The fourth-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team lost its first match of the season Friday, dropping a 4-3 decision to fifth-ranked Stanford in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
