Freije Named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week 2/2/2004
Freije Named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week Vanderbilt senior Matt Freije was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week (January 26 – February 1) as announced Monday by the league office. Freije recorded back-to-back double-doubles last week with game highs in points (26) and rebounds (11) against No. 23 South Carolina and game highs in points (20) and rebounds (11) against No. 5 Kentucky. He made three free throws and grabbed two rebounds and a steal in the last 1:40 of the Kentucky contest to secure the 66-60 upset win. His tip-in with nine seconds remaining tied the South Carolina contest at 55-55. Freije is averaging 18.6 points and 6.1 rebounds this season for the Commodores (14-4 overall, 3-4 SEC). The 6-10, 245-pound forward, who ranks third in the league in scoring, is averaging 22.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in Vanderbilt’s last four games. The Overland Park, Kan., native is only the third player in school history with more than 1,600 career points and 500 career rebounds, joining Clyde Lee (1,691 points and 1,223 rebounds) and Charles Davis (1,675 points and 746 rebounds). He enters Saturday’s game at Florida with 1,618 points (seventh-best in school history) and 522 boards. He needs 107 more points to become the Commodores’ all-time leading scorer, passing Phil Cox’s record of 1,724. This marks the third SEC Player of the Week honor for Freije. He also received recognition from the conference as a sophomore on January 21, 2002, and last season on February 3, 2003. He is the 10th Commodore to win the honor since the 1994-95 season and the first this year.
