No. 12 Commodores Blast No. 32 Baylor, 7-0 1/24/2004 VU women’s tennis earns third-straight 7-0 victory NASHVILLE — The 12th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team recorded its third shutout of the season Friday, defeating No. 32 Baylor, 7-0, at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center. For the third consecutive match, Vanderbilt swept all three doubles positions. This week, the Commodores only gave up a combined three games, with all three doubles team winning, 8-1. Juniors Audra Falk and Annie Menees, ranked No. 28 in the nation, were the first off the court. Sophomore Ashley Schellhas and freshman Amanda Fish followed close behind, clinching the doubles point for VU. Seniors Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos complete the doubles shutout. In singles play, Vanderbilt’s top three wasted little time in deciding the match. Schmandt, ranked 94th in the nation, made short work of a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 3. Tsoubanos was victorious at the second spot by a count of 6-1, 6-2. And No. 39 Falk, Vanderbilt top-seeded player, iced the Commodore victory with a straight-set victory of her own, 6-3, 6-4. Menees’ victory at No. 5 singles, by a tally of 6-3, 7-5, gave the Commodores a 5-0 lead. Fish needed a first-set tiebreaker to capture her match at No. 4 singles, but won the second set, 6-4, to continue Vanderbilt’s dominance. Schellhas was the only Commodore to lose a set on the day. She dropped the first, 2-6, and then gave up the first three games in the second set before rallying. Schellhas took the second, 6-4, and then won the third-set tiebreaker (played first to 10 points, by two), 12-10, to complete the Vanderbilt sweep. The Commodores (3-0) are back in action this Sunday, Jan. 25, when they play host to No. 4 Duke at the Currey Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. CT. Agate: |
