VU women’s tennis earns second-straight 7-0 victory

NASHVILLE — The 12th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team earned its second shutout victory of the weekend Sunday by defeating No. 31 Virginia, 7-0, at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center.

Much like Friday’s Michigan State match, the Dores got off to a quick start on Sunday, sweeping all three doubles matches. The second-ranked pairing of Schmandt/Tsoubanos led off with an 8-1 victory over Fritz-Krockow/Bruch at the top position. No. 28 Falk/Menees clinched the doubles point for Vanderbilt with a 8-4 win over James/Stough, which was followed closely by an 8-2 victory for Schellhas/Fish over Hammond/Montgomery.

The six singles matches saw much of the same from Vanderbilt. Junior Audra Falk (No. 39), playing No. 1 for the Commodores, made short work of No. 74 Mariko Fritz-Krockow, winning 6-2, 6-0, to give Vanderbilt a quick 2-0 lead. Freshman Amanda Fish (No. 66) extended the Commodore lead to three when she put the finishing touches on a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles.

Junior Annie Menees scored the match-clinching point at No. 4. Menees battled to take the first set, 6-4, but then cruised to a 6-0 second set, defeating Kentucky-transfer Shannon Stough. Even with the match decided, the remaining Commodores refused to let up.

Senior Aleke Tsoubanos was never threatened in a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kristen James at No. 2. Sophomore Ashley Schellhas (No. 77), who took the court after the completion of Falk’s match, defeated Dora Bechliwanis, 6-4, 6-0, to give the Dores a 6-0 advantage. Senior Kelly Schmandt (No. 94) put the finishing touches on the Vanderbilt shutout. After losing the first set, 6-4, Schmandt rallied to take the second, 6-4, and won the third, 6-2.

The Commodores (2-0) are back in action next weekend when they play host to No. 32 Baylor and No. 4 Duke at the Currey Tennis Center. The Baylor match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, while the Duke match is slated for Sunday, Jan. 25, at 10:30 a.m. Both matches will be double-headers with the Vanderbilt men’s team.
