Team “V-UNIT Soldiers” Claims 2003 Omaha Challenge Championship 12-16-03
Nashville, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt baseball team finished their fall conditioning last week with the second annual Omaha Challenge. Vanderbilt baseball strength and conditioning coach John Moore designed the competition to build team unity through numerous resistance, agility and conditioning tests. Events included the dumbbell incline, pull ups, Omaha run (1.5 mile run through the athletic facilities), dips, 60- and 400-yard shuttles, a hanging-towel hold, 185-pound bench press rep test, a backwards run sled pull with 185-pounds and a 400-meter 135-pound sled pull sprint. The Challenge concluded with an obstacle course which included a monster tire flip, tractor push, as well as tests of brute strength, speed, agility, plyometics and the burning desire to win. Team “V-Unit Soldiers” won the team competition, totalling 5,488.39 points. The V-Unit Soldiers included senior first baseman Cesar Nicolas, sophomore catcher Matt McGraner, pitcher Matt Buschmann, junior second basebam Zach Simpson, sophomore pitcher Blake Owen, junior infielder Gil Kim, freshman pitcher/outfielder Stephen Shao, and freshman pitcher Cameron Betourne. Sophomore right-hander Matt Buschmann finished first among all pitchers with 988.87 points. Junior shortstop Ryan Klosterman led all position players with 981.83 points.
