Women’s Cross Country Team Places Fifth at NCAA Regional 11/17/2003 Auburn, AL. – The Vanderbilt women’s cross country team placed fifth at the NCAA South Regional held today in Auburn, AL. The Commodores finished with a score of 132 on the 6K course. The fifth place finish ties the record for best ever team finish in school history. Vanderbilt also took home fifth place in 1997 and 2001. The team score of 132 breaks the previous record of 145, set in 1997. So, although the Commodores failed to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Championships, this was a record-setting preformance. Tennessee (1st, 71), and Florida State (2nd, 93) automatically qualify for the championship meet by placing in the top two this meet. Florida State senior Vicky Gil took home individual honors with a time of 19:48.04. Vanderbilt was led by sophomore Erika Schneble (13th, 21:24.62), freshman Ashleigh Wetzel (17th, 21:32.72), and frehsman Debbie Huss (20th, 21:35.56). Schneble, Wetzel, and Huss have been in Vanderbilt’s top three in every meet this season. Also scoring and finishing for the Commodores were sophomore Caitlin Shannon (36th, 22:03.63), sophomore Jackie Wachsman (48th, 22:26.69), junior Nadiyah Humber (66th, 22:44.41), and freshman Lauren Pence (74th, 22:51.20). This has been one of the strongest seasons in Commodore history. Vanderbilt will return the bulk of its team next year, and with a season of experience behind them the Commodores should be even more impressive in the 2004 season.
