VU Women’s Golfers Win Kentucky Tournament 10/3/2003 Vanderbilt broke away from a second round tie with Mississippi State and won the 18-team Wildcat Fall Invitational at the University of Kentucky by a whopping 15 shots. The Commodores, led by co-medalist Chris Brady, shot a team 303 for the final day to win their first tournament of the season and second in two years. Brady, a freshman from Cary, N.C., shot 73 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 227 to tie with Louisville’s Meghan Little. Little went on to win the playoff in what was just Brady’s third college event. “We played with a lot more composure and a with a lot of fight today,” said Coach Martha Freitag, who had been critical of her teams’ first two rounds. “That is one of the toughest courses we will play all year because of the conditions. The back nine, when it is windy, is one of the toughest back nines I’ve seen in women’s college golf. Sometimes you can be playing well and then string a few bogeys together in the wind and get rattled. We stayed focused today.” “Chris Brady did an outstanding job,” Freitag continued. “She finished par-birdie-par, holing out of a bunker on 17, to make it to the play-off.” Freitag called the team’s 303 score today “a solid round considering the difficult conditions” and said the experience will be helpful to the team in future events. Sarah Jacobs ended the tournament in fourth place, one spot higher than a week ago at the Mason Rudolph Championship. May Wood gave Vanderbilt three members of the Top 10 by finishing with a 74 to place ninth. Vanderbilt and Mississippi State share the lead with a two-round total of 47-over-par – 623. Jacobs, fourth place overall, is only two shots back of leaders Meghan Little from Louisville and Marissa Muir of Kentucky. Freshman Chris Brady also posted a solid round with a 78 which was good enough for 10th place and only five shots back of the leaders. The remaining Commodores are all tied at 23rd and 17-over-par. Courtney Wood shot a 79 on a day where very few players posted rounds under 80. Kristen Svicarovich and May Wood shot a pair of 83s to round out the Vanderbilt scoring. The third and final round will be played Sunday. Leading the Commodores was freshman Chris Brady who fired a four-over-par 76 which placed her in a tie for seventh overall. Brady was followed close behind by May Wood and Kristen Svicarovich who each carded a 78. Sarah Jacobs scored a seven-over-par 79 and Courtney Wood had a ten-over 82.
