Nashville, Tenn.

– Senior Michelle Bruntlett’s penalty kick hit the left post and deflected in giving Vanderbilt a 1-0 overtime victory over Georgia in Southeastern Conference action on Senior Day in the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Vanderbilt is now 7-6-3, 3-4-2 in SEC play, while Georgia falls to 11-7-0, 4-4 in league action.

Bruntlett was awarded the penalty kick after Georgia’s Marilee Eback was called for a handball in the penalty box at the 95:36 mark. It was Bruntlett’s fourth goal of the season.

Georgia’s Geneil Newbern took a shot at the 11:45 mark that looked like a Bulldogs score when VU’s goalie Esther Thompson was out of the box, but Kari Boersma raced back to save the ball just before it crossed the goal line.

VU’s Susan McAleavy also had a scoring opportunity at the 67:52 mark when she was granted a direct kick after Georgia goalkeeper Ashley Lindley was called for holding the ball outside of the box. Her shot sailed high and right keeping the score tied at 0-0.

Vanderbilt totaled five shots in the game, including four on goal, while Georiga numbered seven shots, six on goal.

VU’s Thompson picked up the win with five saves and earned her sixth shutout of the season. UGA’s Ashley Lindley totaled three saves in the contest.

Vanderbilt honored its nine seniors prior to the game, including Bruntlett, Thompson, Laura Hershenow, Erin Higgins, Jennifer Lewis, Kendra Sasa, Stacee Sproul, Jen Talavera and Emily Wilpers.

The Commodores end the regular season Wednesday in non-conference action at Saint Louis.
