Ramsey, Benningfield and Stringfield Lead Women’s Basketball Squad in Controlled Scrimmage 10-26-03 10/26/2003 Abi Ramsey scored a game-high 14 points, including four three-pointers and Jenni Benningfield and Cherish Stringfield each added eight points apiece as the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team participated in a controlled scrimmage, Sunday, Oct. 26, at Memorial Gym. The Commodores played a total of 28 minutes during four quarters of action. Two quarter were against a group of five male practice players. Several Commodores switched between the Black and Gold teams during the event. Ramsey, a 5-10 junior guard from Shelbyville, Tenn., converted 5-of-10 field goal attempts, including 4-of-9 attempts from behind the three-point arc to lead all scorers. She also grabbed five rebounds and handed out two assists. Benningfield, a 6-3 senior forward from Louisville, Ky., made 4-of-7 from the field with a rebound, an assist and one steal. Stringfield, a freshman guard from Wakefield, Va., led all newcomers after making 3-of-8 field goal attempts and 2-of-6 three-point attempts. She also contributed two rebounds and two steals. “We had spurts where good things happened that made us excited for the future and then we also had some lulls where we made mental mistakes and turned the ball over,” Head Coach Melanie Balcomb said. “The effort was there. We had people diving for loose balls and drawing charges. It was very competitive.” Other Commodores who posted strong efforts included a pair of freshmen, 5-7 guard Dee Davis and 6-3 forward Carla Thomas. Davis, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, swiped a scrimmage-high four steals while handing out three assists. She had five points on 2-of-4 shooting, including 1-of-2 three-pointers. Thomas, a native of Mechanicsburg, Pa., grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and added two assists and a steal to go along with two points. “We have a very competitive team,” Balcomb said. “There is so much competition and effort at each position. It will make us better as the season progresses.” The Commodores play the first of two exhibition games on Nov. 11 against Mike White’s All-Stars. After a second exhibition game against Athletes in Action, Nov. 17, the Commodores begin the regular season in Burlington, Vt., at the Banknorth Classic, Nov. 21-22. Vanderbilt begins the two-day classic against South Alabama before playing either St. Francis (N.Y.) or host Vermont. Vanderbilt plays its home opener in Memorial Gym, Nov. 28, against Samford at the two-day Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament.
