Florida Defeats Vanderbilt, 3-1 10/20/2003
Gainesville, Fla. – The #9 Florida Gators scored two second-half goals to defeat the Vanderbilt Commodores 3-1 in Southeastern Conference action. Florida is now 12-2-1, 4-1-1 in SEC play, while Vanderbilt owns an overall mark of 6-6-2, 2-4-1 in league play. Ashley Kellgren scored for the Lady Gators at the 6:27 mark on a 23-yard goal off a Vanderbilt goal kick. Vanderbilt’s Erin Higgins scored her first goal of the season at the 28:58 mark when she punched in a shot off a deflection of Florida’s goalkeeper Brittni Goodwin. The game was tied at one at halftime. Stephanie Freeman gave the Lady Gators the lead, 2-1, at the 53:05 mark when she hit a shot in from eight-yards out with an assist from Kellgren and Goodwin. Christine Johnson scored the final goal of the game with just eight minutes remaining when her shot from 12-yards out went in the left side of the goal. Florida outshot the Commodores 19-7 with Vanderbilt’s Esther Thompson numbering nine saves in the contest, while Florida’s Goodwin numbered three saves. Vanderbilt hosts Tennessee and Georgia this weekend at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. The Commodores play the Lady Vols Friday (Oct. 24) and the Bulldogs Sunday (Oct. 26). Box Score (.pdf) |
