Drake Defeats Vanderbilt, 2-1

. — Besmir Bega scored at the 42:52 mark to give Drake a 2-1 victory over Vanderbilt this afternoon at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Drake is now 8-3-3 overall, 2-1-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Vanderbilt is 3-7-1, 0-4-1 in league action.

Drake scored first when Jesse Baker hit a shot from six-yards out in the middle of a crowd just nine minutes into the game. Vanderbilt tied the game just over 10 minutes later when Ryan Paugh scored his first goal of the season from 10-yards out on a cross from Jimmy Stone. With just over two minutes remaining in the half, Bega scored the game winner for the Bulldogs when he caught VU goalkeeper Conor Ellinger coming out of the net. Bega’s shot went left to right from 15-yards out to the top right hand side of the net. Drake just missed another scoring opportunity with five seconds remaining in the half when Andrew Kewley’s header was saved by Ellinger.

The Commodores had three shots, two on goal, in just under 10 minute remaining in the game. Brendan Matthews shot at 80:37 was saved by Drake’s Zack Brennan and three minutes later, Brennan saved a Jamie Gilbert header. Jimmy Stone’s shot at the 88:16 mark was high following a foul on Drake.

Vanderbilt totaled 17 shots, while Drake numbered 16 shots. Ellinger numbered six saves in the contest for the Commodores allowing the two goals. Brennan totaled seven saves for the Bulldogs.

Drake committed 23 fouls compared to Vanderbilt’s 17.

Vanderbilt ends the regular home season next weekend the Commodores host SMU Friday (Oct. 24) and Tulsa Sunday (Oct. 26).
