Women Golfers to Stanford

10/16/2003

Coach Martha Freitag and her women’s golf team heads west this weekend for the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate, to be played Friday through Sunday at the Stanford Golf Course.

The Commodores, rated as high as No. 6 nationally, are coming off a victory at the Wildcat Invitational in Kentucky two weeks ago.  For the past two years, Vanderbilt has finished second in this power-packed west coast field and some of the program’s best efforts have come over Stanford’s 6,168 yard, par 72 layout.

For instance, in 2001 Vanderbilt shot a team 872 for 54 holes — the second best round in school history.  Included in that total was a school record 280, fueled by Nicki Cutler’s school record five-under 67.  Four of Vanderbilt’s all-time best 10 rounds have come at Stanford.

Included in this year’s field are top ranked Duke, No. 3 Arizona, No. 4 UCLA and No. 5 New Mexico among the 18 teams.

The Commodores have a 20-8 record this fall in head-to-head action against the Golfstat.com Top 25 teams, including a perfect mark against teams rated No. 12 through No. 25.

Vanderbilt’s team is comprised of seniors Courtney Wood and Sarah Jacobs, sophomore May Wood and freshmen Chris Brady and Kristin Svicarovich.  Brady lost a play-off for first place at the Wildcat Invitational.

There will be 18 holes played Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  California is the defending champion with Erica Blasberg of Arizona, who won this year’s Mason Rudolph Championship, back to defend her medalist honor.
