Ryan Klosterman (5-11, 175, Jr., IF, Clermont, Fla.) totaled three hits and one RBI to help lead the Vanderbilt Gold Team to a 6-5 win over the Black team in the final game of the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Series. The Gold Team won the series after dropping the first game, 6-4, to the Black Team. The Gold Team won the second game, 3-2.

“I guess this is the way it should end with a one-run game,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said. “One team got ahead and the other battled to get back into it, so that’s pretty promising.”

With the Gold Team leading 6-1 going into the top of the eighth, the Black team cut the deficit to two, 6-4, scoring three runs.  Aaron Garza (6-0, 179, Fr., OF, Austin, Texas) struck out but advanced to first on a wild pitch (Cody Crowell) and advanced to third on a hit by Stephen Shao (5-11, 172, Fr., OF, Hermitage, Tenn.).  Garza then scored his second run of the game on a hit up the third base line by Warner Jones (5-10, 160, So., IF, Nashville, Tenn.).  Bill Kleinschrodt (6-3, 205, Fr., OF, Mobile, Ala.) then drew a walk and Zach Simpson (6-0, 185, Jr., IF, Fayetteville, Ark.) drove in two runs (Shao, Jones) with a single to left field.

The Black team scored in the first inning when Jones hit a single to right field scoring the lead-off man Garza who was hit by a pitch and stole second base.

The Gold team tied the game in the second inning when Colton Daines (5-11, 183, Jr., Emerald Hills, Calif.) scored from second on a single to center field by Mike Baxter (6-0, 169, So., IF, White Stone, NY).

After a scoreless third inning, the Gold Team then scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Matt McGraner (6-2, 205, So., C, Germantown, Tenn.) began the fourth inning with a walk and advanced to second on a hit from Daines. McGraner then stole third and scored on a wild pitch (Ty Davis). In the fifth inning, Tony Mansolino (6-0, 200, Jr., IF, Collierville, Tenn.) led off with a hit and advanced to second on a balk.  He then scored on a triple by Matt Zeller (6-3, 175, So., OF, Leawood, Kan.). In the bottom of the sixth inning, Baxter led off with a single and scored on Gil Kim’s (5-6, 150, Jr., IF, Pottsville, Penn.) double to deep left center field.  Antoan Richardson (5-8, 165, Jr., OF, Nassau, Bahamas) walked and both he and Kim advanced on a double steal.  Kim then scored when Klosterman grounded out to first base. The Gold team added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Zeller scored on a single to right center field from Daines for a 6-1 lead.

Down 6-4, the Black Team started a rally in the top of the ninth when Jonathan Douillard (6-0, 190, Sr., C, Acworth, Ga.) drew a walk on four consecutive pitches from Nick Pilkington (6-4, 185, So., Brighton, Tenn.). Rucker Taylor (5-10, 160, So., IF, Montrose, Ala.) advanced to first after being hit by a pitch.  Garza then hit a shot down the third base line where Jones tagged third and then completed the double play to first. With two away, Shao hit a single to right center field scoring Taylor from second base. With the score 6-5, Jones reached first on an error by Mansolino whose throw was high to first baseman Cesar Nicolas (6-4, 225, Sr., 1B, Miami, Fla.).  Kleinschrodt then hit another shot to Mansolino who made the throw to Nicolas for the final out of the game stranding two runners.

Freshman Greg Moviel (6-6, 226, Fr., LHP, Berea, Ohio) picked up the win for the Gold Team facing 12 batters and giving up two hits with no runs. Pilkington earned the save. Ty Davis (6-3, 212, Fr., RHP, Austin, Texas) picked up the loss pitching one inning and giving up one hit and one run.

The Commodores begin the 2004 season with a three-game home series with Southern Illinois Feb. 20-22.
